It could be one of several things. In our experience, we have found this ‘green stuff’ to be one of the following (or a combination of) algae, moss, lichen, mold or mildew. Any of the listed item will cause the greenish colored growth that you see on your roof or siding. While they all are similar in appearance, there is a difference between them, however no matter what the issue is, it really needs to be removed. If your location gets a lot of rain, or is heavy in moisture / humidity, this growth is encouraged by the environment. If not removed in a reasonable amount of time, the stains may become permanent. You’ll want to have that greenish growth removed as quickly as possible.

If you live in a neighborhood or community that has a HOA (Homeowners Association), they may have ‘rules’ in place which affect the appearance of your property and home. A HOA usually wants your property to be presentable and clean since it affects the value of others in the same community. They may have certain rules and regulations in place where you must remove the mold from your siding and/or roof, otherwise you risk being fined a fee. Your homeowner’s insurance does not want to be liable for someone getting sick because the mold on your house has gotten out of control. Many homeowner insurance policies have a clause in it which specifies that if any mold grows on the outside, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to remove it as quickly as possible. If left alone to grow, mold can infiltrate into the actual structure of your home and begin to have a serious impact. Wood will eventually rot causing the stability of your home’s structure to be significantly decreased. Mold will feed on paper, wood, glues, and other organic substances. If left alone even longer, mold could creep onto interior walls, ceilings and floors which could have a major impact on the structure’s stability.

It appears that this mold forms and grows quicker when more moisture is present. The more moisture a side of your house sees, the greater the possibility that mold will grow there. Almost all houses/buildings have sides that get a good amount of sunlight, while other sides may not and usually stay shaded. The lack of direct sunlight, coupled with the presence of high moisture will usually do the trick. Often there will not only be green growth, but you may see growth so dark that it appears black. This can be cause by soot if you live near chimneys that exhaust either wood or oil-based fires. Yellow stains may also be found, and they can be caused by insulation that is breaking down somewhere behind your siding. Other stains can be cause by gutters that are not properly aligned which would force water to run down the side of the house, instead of it properly going through the gutters and down spouts.
